BMS Hosts Preliminary Mark Twain Nominated Author!

BMS welcomed 2012-13 preliminary Mark Twain Award nominee, Dr. Jean Stringam, on Friday, November 18th, to conclude this year's Literacy Week! Dr. Stringam hosted an interactive presentation, using a variety of props to expressing her love of writing.

About 130 students attended the author's presentation.

Dr. Stringam's visit helped conclude our 2011-12 Literacy Week.

Mark Twain Nominated Author to Visit BMS!

The BMS Library is very excited to announce the upcoming author visit of Mrs. N.A. Nelson. Mrs. Nelson is the author of Bringing the Boy Home, which is one of this year’s Mark Twain award nominees.

She will be visiting the middle school on Wednesday, October 13th.

Students who sign up for the Bringing the Boy Home Impact class or those who read the book and pass the Reading Counts quiz on their own will be eligible to attend Mrs. Nelson's presentation.

Mrs. Nelson will have book-signing session after her presentation, and those students who own their own copy will have the opportunity to have their book signed. Flyers were sent home with students. If you did not receive a form and would like to order a book, please contact Mrs. Methvin at 326-3811 or kmethvin@bolivar.k12.mo.us.

This promises to be a wonderful experience - someone who loves to write coming to a place that loves to read! What a great way for BMS to celebrate its love of literacy!

Here is brief summary of the book for you to enjoy:

Limo Lunch Race 2009-10

Bolivar Middle School is once again offering the Limo Lunch Race incentive program. All you have to do is read a Reading Counts! book, take the book quiz, and pass it. There are only 56 open seats, so you better kick the reading in high gear!
Here is how it works:

You need to read as many Reading Counts! books that you can. Then, take and pass the quizzes.

You need to read at your Lexile or higher; however, if there is a great book you want to read that is below your Lexile, the rule is that you can read it, but only 20% of your reading can be below Lexile. (For those students with a Lexile of 1000 and above, you can read on grade level).

There will be 28 students who get to go on the limo who have the “most words read” and 28 students who represent the “most books read.” That way, if you like to read really thick books, you are able to compete fairly!

The BMS library staff will run reports during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters to show who is in the lead for the Limo Lunch Race! In May the final report will be run, the numbers tallied, and the names will be announced. We will hop in the limos and enjoy lunch out on the town!

What is the Limo Lunch Race?

The Limo Lunch Race is a reading incentive program hosted by the BMS Library. The top 28 students who read the most words and the top 28 students who read the most books throughout the school year will get to enjoy lunch on the town in May. Limo Lunch winners will get to eat lunch with fellow classmates while riding around town in a limo. Limo Lunch recipients will end their lunch experience with a group picture and a sweet treat! Literacy Day a SUCCESS!

BMS hosted its second annual Literacy Day on Wednesday, November 19th. This day, devoted strictly to literacy, emphasizes the importance of being able to read and write effectively. The students, faculty, and staff participated in several activities throughout the week, and it turned out to be a HUGE success!

Here are some of the activities that took place:

Read-A-Thon: BMS students, faculty, and staff members read throughout the week with a goal of 30,000 pages. If students made it to 15,000 pages, Mr. Dublin and Mr. Methvin had to serve lunch to the students (all decked out in gloves, aprons, hair nets, etc.). If students reached 20,000 pages, our principals agreed to perform a puppet show for the middle school. Finally, if students reached the goal of 30,000, Mr. Dublin and Mr. Methvin agreed to perform a live concert for the entire middle school to see! In addition to that, they also had to do the first two tasks!

BMS is proud to announce that everyone read over 125,000 pages throughout that week! They blew the mercury off the “Pages Read Meter”!

Also on Literacy Day, teachers dressed up as characters from books. The costumes were judged on an individual basis and on a grade-level academic team basis. Dr. Steve Morgan, Mrs. T.C. Wall, and Mrs. Sandy Krueger judged the teachers’ costumes and, after much deliberation, decided on the following winners:

Individual winner - Mrs. Kathy Holiday with partner Courtney Mashburn (6th grade) as Mrs. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus

Team winner - Encore Team as characters from The Wizard of Oz.

A special “THANK YOU” goes out to the following people for helping make Literacy Day possible:

Dr. Steve Morgan, Mrs. T.C. Wall, Mrs. Sandy Krueger, Mr. Dublin, Mr. Methvin, BMS faculty and staff, and the awesome BMS students!
